THE ISLAND OF LANZAROTE
Lanzarote is the Canary archipelago’s south-easternmost island, administered by Spain. Scattered with about 140 volcanoes, the landscape is interrupted here and there by lush valleys full of palm trees that stand out against a backdrop of black lava fields. The island boasts stunning beaches (both golden sand and black volcanic pebbles), sparkling natural pools and excellent opportunities for hiking or cycling, not to mention the many hotels and restaurants. The Cabildo de Lanzarote’s Centres for Art, Culture and Tourism are integrated in the volcanic nature of the island and are their main tourist attractions. César Manrique, the island’s best-known artist, created these unique spaces by perfectly bringing together art and nature under a philosophy and a model of intervention based on sustainability. Furthermore, Lanzarote is renowned for its year-round warm weather, with an average annual temperature of 22° C.
WHAT TO SEE:
There are many exciting things to do in Lanzarote during your stay. Here is a short list of things that past participants have enjoyed:
-
Parque Nacional de Timanfaya – Lunar landscapes and surreal lava fields originated between 1730 and 1736 from one of the greatest volcanic cataclysms in history.
-
Jardín de Cactus – Created by César Manrique, the garden houses around 4,500 examples of 450 species of cactus from all over the world (from Mexico to Madagascar!)
-
Mirador de Rio – Spectacular viewpoint on the large solidified lava waterfall that flows into the ocean and Isla Graciosa.
-
Caleta de Famara – Golden wild beach where surfers face some of the best waves in the Canaries.
-
Playa de Papagayo – One of the most beautiful beaches of Lanzarote, an expanse of clear golden sand lapped by transparent waters.
-
Cueva de los Verdes – A 1 km long abyssal cavity that represents the most spectacular part of a lava tunnel created 5000 years ago by a volcanic eruption.
-
Fuerteventura & Isla Graciosa – Easy day trips to the islands next door.
